Understanding Education Research: Tips, Tools and Advice for Journalists from Teachers College
The Hechinger Institute teaches journalists how to access and understand education research. Its latest tool, "The Hechinger Institute Guide to Education Research for Journalists," is available on the Hechinger website at http://hechinger.tc.columbia.edu/. At a conference sponsored by the Institute, Jeffrey Henig, a professor of political science and education at Teachers College, provided insight about how education research becomes news that filters down to the public. Henig used examples from his new book "Spin Cycle: How Research Is Used in Policy Debates, The Case of Charter Schools," (Russell Sage Foundation/The Century Foundation, 2008), to help reporters understand ways that research can easily be misunderstood or taken out of context.
The doctoral dissertation is academia's Mount Everest -- a massive undertaking, requiring discipline, stamina and emotional reserves. A new book from TC maps the steps for completing a qualitative dissertation.
On Monday, August 11th at 12 noon, PBS (WNET Channel 13) aired a new episode in which Elmo, the fuzzy red children's icon on Sesame Street, displays his new rhythmic chops. Two of TC Professor Lori Custodero's students -- pianist Patrice Turner and saxophonist Josh Renick -- appear on-screen. The show will repeat on WNET on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 7 a.m. It aired on WLIW Channel 21 on Aug. 11th at 9 a.m., and on NJN in New Jersey on Aug. 12th at 9 a.m.
Janice Robinson, who has served as Teachers College's General Counsel, has been promoted to the newly created position of Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs.
The New York Sun reports that a group led by TC faculty member Aaron Pallas has found that the test scores of black and Hispanic students in New York City have risen during the Bloomberg era -- but that the gap that separates them from white students remains as wide as ever.
